More Students Are Attending Community Colleges

The economic situation in our country has perpuated a slight change in the higher education environment. According to David Tirrell-Wysocki, a writer from the Associated Press:
"The two-year schools are reporting unprecedented enrollment increases this semester, driven by students from traditional colleges seeking more bang for their buck and by laid off older workers."

  1. Thank you for this post. I'm very interested to read the article you referenced. I'm a former community college academic adviser and write my own blog for college students. I appreciate finding great information from professionals such as yourself!

  2. I teach at a community college and our college numbers have not been increasing. In fact, a college that has been growing at 1,000 students per year, slowed growth enough that they did not hire anyone this year. (For the last four or five they have hired every year due to high demand.)

I am in Texas, where the economy is not hurting as it is in other places.

I have kept up with other community colleges, though, and the growth is taking a toll in this economic climate when state funding dries up and students flood in.

  3. I could see this changing trend. In many areas credits transfer to the 4 year institution so why not complete 30 or so hours (up to 60 in some situations) and then complete the last year at the 4 year of your choice. Sounds like a sound economic choice!

  4. I think we're going to see more of this even in Texas. My husband's granddaughter came to our school during her spring break for a campus tour. She and her parents were shocked at room and (especially) board costs - about $12 per day for more meals than she wants/needs, and freshmen are required to live on campus. She's one of seven children, so it is highly likely she will attend the community college in her hometown for her first two years.
