6 Ways for Higher Education Faculty and Staff to Handle Conflict in Their Department


I know that you get along with everyone right? Wrong! I will almost promise you that you will not get along with everyone all of the time. As a millennial, I am in a workplace (higher education) in which I do not have many peers. I am in my mid-30s and most of my peers are in their 50s and 60s. As a black professor, I do not see many people who look like me who do what I do on campus each day (teaching). 

When differences are evident, this means that disagreements can happen. We have to be prepared for these disagreements ahead of time and to mentally be alert to HOW we are reacting to situations and people. 

Recently, I read an article in Entrepreneur that can be applied to the higher education environment as well. "How to Handle Office Conflict" focused on six ways that employers can address office conflict amongst their employees. These strategies can also be applied to student affairs and the tenure track process.

1 - Confront It - Sometimes when we disagree with someone and we do not address the conflict when it arises, it can become worse. For instance, if you have to work on a group project with someone and you are taking more of the responsibility, this means that you need to address this responsibility inequity with your research or student affairs partner!

2 - Know When to Cut Ties - When you are working on a research project with someone and they do not hold up their end of the research bargain, you can cut your ties with your research partner. Sometimes, it is VERY difficult to do so, but in the long run it can save you months of anguish!

3 - Take It Outside - When you address the issue, you need to have in face-to-face and in an open, private place. This means, maybe a table on the patio of the building or perhaps in the library coffee shop, but address the conflict in neutral space.


4 - Embrace It - Know the the conflict exists, acknowledge it and converse about the conflict!

5 - Keep It Constructive - When you converse about the conflict, you need to stay focused on the topic at hand. Sometimes, when a conflict occurs it is easy to think about other items that are affected BY the conflict. AVOID this!

6 - Designate a Mediator - Think about involving someone who is not in your department and perhaps not in your academic college. Faculty conflict and conflict amongst student affairs professionals is very common, but address the conflict before it becomes a larger issue.

Okay guys, resolve the conflict and get stuff done!

Explaining Social Media Data Analysis and the Social Presence Theory on Facebook Live


Everyone has a favorite communication or higher education theory. My favorite theory is the Social Presence Theory (especially for electronic communication. I apply this theory to higher education and communication research.

I also teach this theory to our students (graduate and undergraduate students) each semester. Some of my classes are online and previously this presented a problem for the students who are engaged in the research process. Now, the students have an opportunity to learn about the theory through a new, free webinar software...no, not Zoom - yes it's Facebook Live! Usually I "go live" during our weekly chats for class!

So, I use Facebook Live to teach concepts when students have questions. This has been VERY convenient because students do not have to log on to the software system (Zoom) when they need to access the video. In fact, you do not have to log on to access the video and you can embed it (like the one below) on your Course Management System (we use Blackboard).

Here's a brief description of the Social Presence Theory for our students (and the others who viewed the video).

This semester has been a wonderful challenge because I have had to learn various modifications for several students with visual and hearing abilities. As a result, challenge enabled me to learn new teaching methods in my face-to-face class (which I am VERY happy about).

However, the online classroom presents college faculty with another challenge. I do not think that I am equipped or trained to teach visually-impaired students online. Moreover, I wonder how disability services offices will provide modifications for students with various levels of visual and hearing abilities.

This summer, I was fortunate to attend the "Apps for Higher Education Day" sponsored by the Center for Instructional Innovation (CII) at my higher education institution. This day was planned by some of my favorite people on campus! :)

Finding a Budget-Friendly College or University By Using the New College Scorecard by the U.S. Department of Education


Today, the new college scorecard from the U.S. Department of Education made it's debut on a new website - https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/. This scorecard is meant to help parents and students discover the best and more affordable higher education opportunities for their families.


Also, the new College Scorecard tool was featured on the White House Blog and the Department of Education blog today - Under the Hood: Building a New College Scorecard with Students.

In addition to the New College Scorecard (Comprehensive and Updated Data on Higher Education Institutions), there are several additional resources for families to find the more affordable college with the best features (majors, minors, etc.) for their students. Why Is Important to Understand Barriers Experienced by College Students

At the beginning of each academic year, I am always energized when I see the faces and new fashions of the incoming students (and returning students). In fact, these students are joining us after having various summer experiences with their lives at home, working for local businesses, interning out of state, studying abroad, summer school, and much more!

In fact, during this past week, I've been watching various videos from NBC News (on Hulu) focused on the Freshman Experience. Here are some of my favorites. I think each administrator, faculty member, staff members, and even members from the external campus community should watch one or more of these videos to gain a glimpse into some aspects lives of the students who are joining their campus community.

Video - I have always been intrigued by roommate selection at colleges and universities across the country. Do you know how roommates are selected by most higher education institutions?



Video - Most colleges and university students played one or more sports in high school, but then they transition to college and are not as engaged with their health and wellness. This means that the likelihood of students gaining weight is very high. Do you know that the average weight gained by college students during their first years of college is 15 pounds? Video - Student debt is one of the most crushing reminders that students have when they are happy and jubilant after reaching the requirements of their degree. The Graduate and Undergrad Research Challenge - Checklists, Video, and More!


Each semester, I issue a research CHALLENGE for our students. I am very proud of everything that that the students continue to do and how amazing they are, BUT I am always pushing them to their research limits. I PROMOTE high impact practices in my classroom, both online courses and face-to-face courses.

I support them in their research journey and I help them get their articles and their ideas PUBLISHED in higher education and communication publication outlets. I provide a scaffold-based approach for the students I am help them along the way... through videos! YouTube is definitely my friend.

Celebrating the Texas Social Media Research Institute Seniors!




Every time I become discouraged in higher education, I always have to think about the wonderful students in classes and who are also part of the Texas Social Media Research Institute's internship program. 

Each year, our graduating students are honored for their efforts in the organization and also for their hard work serving the community. They have a special recognition ceremony and then they are also encouraged to give advice for others who are in the organization. Words of Wisdom! :)

iPad Pilots in Higher Education - iPad Pilots


Tonight, I received a great e-mail from Mr. Jim Siegl (@jsiegl). He created and maintains a list titled "iPad Pilots in Higher Education". This list of more than 145 institutions is an EXCELLENT resource for higher education professors who research the effectiveness of iPads in secondary and post-secondary classrooms.


Several Texas institutions are featured on the list. I hope that our university is able to utilize iPads in my proposed course for Fall 2011 (Communication Technology and Social Media).

31 Spooky Ways to Integrate Adobe Software in Higher Education (Post 1/31) - Introduction to the Series!



Readers,

Starting this week, I am starting a NEW series (at least for the month of October). I am very excited to explore one of my favorite software packages - Adobe Software. Over the summer, I received the Adobe Master Suite 5.5 in the mail and I have been super excited to use this software during the summer and also this fall! 

I have been an active user of Adobe Products for the past seven years. In fact, my first software program was Adobe Photoshop when I started working in the Student Services Department at Sam Houston State University. When our student graphic designers were away for the holidays, I was forced to edit event flyers by myself. Through this process, I learned key elements about Adobe software and I started to integrate Adobe software in my everyday life (designing logos, t-shirts, etc.).

Every week this month, you can look forward to some GREAT ideas for the "31 Spooky Ways to Integrate Adobe Software in Higher Education" series. This series is intended for everyday faculty and student affairs professionals (non-designers) who are interested in using Adobe Software Products (i.e. - Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) in their classrooms, student organizations, and departments!

Wandering Wednesdays - Adobe Edition
Every Wednesday, we will feature a higher education professional who uses Adobe software in their courses.
