Research and Writing Tool: The Keyword Generator from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Library

Research and Writing Tool: The Keyword Generator from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Library

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has an incredible tool for students and faculty  writing papers. Sometimes, I have a difficult time brainstorming ideas for a particular research topic (I know that I cannot be the only person), In the past few weeks, I stumbled upon a database quick search tool from U of L Lafayette, "Keyword Generator".

This is a ChatGPT prompt and it can help you develop keywords for your topic!

Basically, you place your search terms or your associated keywords and the system provides some associated terms for you.

Step 1 - I searched for "rural education"

Step 2 - The keyword generator developed these keywords for me:

1. Rural schools
2. Access to education in rural areas
3. Challenges in rural education
4. Remote learning in rural communities
5. Educational equity in rural schools
6. Technology in rural education
7. Teacher recruitment and retention in rural areas
8. School infrastructure in rural communities
9. Dropout rates in rural schools
10. Special education in rural areas
11. Community involvement in rural education
12. Funding for rural schools
13. Curriculum development for rural schools
14. Impact of poverty on rural education
15. Student achievement in rural schools
16. Distance education in rural areas
17. Cultural diversity in rural schools
18. Professional development for rural educators
19. Government policies affecting rural education
20. Best practices in rural education.

Step 3 - After you view your results, you can copy and paste the results AND you can utilize ChatGPT without having to log in!

What do you think about this tool? I will definitely use it! Thanks University of Louisiana at Lafayette!

Preparing for Research Presentations - Poster Presentation Survival Kit

Hi Y'all!

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of presenting for an Undergraduate Research Group at my university. When they initially asked me about presenting about visual presentations, I had to think back to the numerous presentations that I have been fortunate to facilitate all over America.

Then, I thought about the items that I wish I would have had on site when I saw the place where I needed to place my poster. So, I decided to make a "Poster Presentation Survival Kit". This kit contains: masking tape, t-pins, white out, sharpie markers, and cuticle clippers (to serve as scissors for your poster (just in case)).

The presentation was well received and they asked for a copy. I was very impressed with this group and their questions focused on research and the presentation process. We also had a great conversation about presenting information that has not yet been published.

Here's the presentation:

Here are some additional resources. Thanks UNC, UC Davis, and Bucknell!

Teaching Our Students Have to Use the Library's Ebscohost Databases

Research is VERY important for our students! Each of my classes has a research assignment focused on the library. They are paying for it, they should use it. At least this is what I believe. :)

I always make a training video for our students about the library's databases. Here's this year's video!

Helping Students Find Informative and Persuasive Speech Sources on the Ebscohost Databases

As a speech teacher or communication faculty member,  you can definitely learn MANY things about the library databases for informative or persuasive speeches. One primary sticking point that I HAVE to incorporate in my speech assignments is for the students to utilize the library databases to find SIX (6) resources for their speeches.

This is a feat for our freshmen students and our senior-level students who decided to put off taking speech until their final semester at our university. Critical thinking is SO important for ALL students that I require them to learn how to use the library's databases to find relevant information for their speeches.

COMM 5311 - Analyzing Census Bureau and Emergency Management Social Media Data on Twitter

Twitter is an amazing tool for analyzing government-to-community communication. It is important to realize how social media messages can be more effective in reaching their target population. This is why most of my social media research focuses on governmental messaging and how people engage with the messages (or take action as a result of it).

This one of our most recent graduate student research projects. This project analyzes Census Bureau and Emergency Management information sent on social media to see which types of messages are most effective.

Check out the video!

Academic Affairs and Student Affairs Professionals: Assembling Your Personal Team of Advisors

Hi everyone! Throughout my years in academic affairs and student affairs, I've discovered that you  have to have your own team. For example, our students have athletic advisors, student financial aid advisors, and academic advisors. All of these team players can help a student make progress towards success.

Just like our students, we need to have our own tenure and student affairs teams to prepare us for success. For example, my team consists of the following:

1 - One or Two Faculty Team Advisors (You never know when you will need research to help you answer questions.)

2 - One or Two Staff Team Advisors (You never know when you will need help with processes at your institution or to help locate resources.

3 - One or Two Student Team Advisors (You never know when you will need the pulse of campus or to have a student's perspective of a workshop or administrative decision.

4 - One or Two Community Team Advisors (You never know when you will have a need to complete service). Which should be often. ;)

5 - One or Two Family Team Advisors (These are for your moral support. These should be family members who have NO IDEA what you do on a daily basis.)

6 - One or Two Health Team Advisors (These are for your health support. These individuals can include your doctor, your wellness coach, and your workout partners.)

7 - One or Two Financial Mentor Advisors (These are for your financial stability for the current time and also for the future. These individuals can include your friends, your family members or formal advisors.)

Your team will be dynamic and it will change over time, but I strongly success reassessing your team every six months. See if your interests align with their interests. If they do not, make a professional exit strategy and write a thank you note.

So, assemble your team. Get started - now!

How to Promote Your Academic Research Through Live Video

My question for all of you is - "If research occurs in a silo and it is not communicated to others, did it actually happen?" I encourage all of you to make your research known by others. Communication is essential to the research process and it can occur in different contexts:

  • in the classroom
  • at a conference
  • in a research journal
  • on an infographic
  • on a blog (like this one)
  • on Twitter
  • on Instagram
  • on YouTube
  • on Facebook Live
  • on Live Video (like Twitter Live/Periscope, Facebook Live, etc.)

One of my favorite forms of research communication is on Live Video. I love the live feedback and I thrive on the questions of others. These questions can definitely help you research process and help you develop additional ways of examining your data.

After my students write their research papers (as graduate and undergraduate students), I require them to present their research online. Yes, LIVE! Only one person needs to present, but everyone has to log in and participate in the presentation. It is interesting because we have had MANY people join the live video and answer questions. :)

Here's the checklist that I send to the students each semester before the Periscope/Twitter Live sessions begin.

1 - REMEMBER TO DOWNLOAD THE PERISCOPE APP

2 - SHARE YOUR USERNAME WITH YOUR GROUP MEMBERS

3 - TURN OFF THE LOCATION FEATURE ON THE APP

4 - LET'S PRACTICE! INVITE YOUR GROUP MEMBERS AND BEGIN BROADCASTING WITH THE #TSUNEWMEDIA HASHTAG.

5 - DOUBLE TAP THE SCREEN TO SHOW YOUR COMPUTER (YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SHOW YOUR FACE IN THE PERISCOPE)

6 - ENCOURAGE GROUP MEMBERS TO SHARE THE BROADCAST AND TO PROVIDE COMMENTS (THEY WILL ALSO ANSWER QUESTIONS)

7 - WHEN THE PERISCOPE ENDS SAVE THE BROADCAST TO YOUR TELEPHONE.

8 - ASK ME QUESTIONS ALONG THE WAY - @DRJTEDWARDS

Follow my Twitter account @drjtedwards around November and April of each year to discover the Periscope/Twitter Live videos! :)
