How to Create an Undergraduate Conference for Your Classes!

This year, I decided to think outside of the box with my undergraduate Organizational Communication class by infusing a high impact undergraduate research initiative. This means, each week, we examined an aspect of organizational communication and then they researched the concept as well. By the end of the semester, we had a COMPLETE paper and a COMPLETE undergraduate research conference!

Helping Students Develop a Finals Mindset Through Food!

Before transitioning back to the Communication Studies Department, I always highlighted each holiday by sponsoring a themed food bar! This helps the undergraduate students develop a finals mindset.

This means, yogurt bar, grilled cheese bar, cookie decoration bar, etc. They loved it!

This year, I adapted to my new role by creating a hot cocoa bar! This is easy to do for your department as well!

How You Can Provide Customer Service on Twitter (Publicly and Via Direct Message)

I love traveling and especially flying from DFW airport. When I fly, I always engage with the airline before, during, and after the flight. Most of the airlines respond in a timely manner and apparently I am part of a social media customer management system, because I tweet on phrase and they know my record locator and entire history!

This social media communication is great for the airline as well, because they can demonstrate social media competence and maintain social presence with their flyers (especially their frequent flyers).

Enjoy this video focused on how American Airlines, United Airlines, and more connect with their customers on social media.

This is part of an undergraduate research activity at Tarleton State University and it is considered to be a high impact practice.

Data Analysis: California and Texas Public Health Initiatives

I am a health communication researcher, primarily in the areas of social media and awareness for veterans and underrepresented populations. During a graduate class this semester, the students decided to research how two states provided outreach for their citizens through Twitter.

We also examined the engagement for India, England, and the United States for public health outreach. We hope to present the information at a conference soon. Take a look at our strategy and data analysis for public health:

This is definitely a high impact practice for students. I like to integrate research in each course that I teach - online and offline!

Explaining Social Media Data Analysis and the Social Presence Theory on Facebook Live

Everyone has a favorite communication or higher education theory. My favorite theory is the Social Presence Theory (especially for electronic communication. I apply this theory to higher education and communication research.

I also teach this theory to our students (graduate and undergraduate students) each semester. Some of my classes are online and previously this presented a problem for the students who are engaged in the research process. Now, the students have an opportunity to learn about the theory through a new, free webinar software...no, not Zoom - yes it's Facebook Live! Usually I "go live" during our weekly chats for class!

So, I use Facebook Live to teach concepts when students have questions. This has been VERY convenient because students do not have to log on to the software system (Zoom) when they need to access the video. In fact, you do not have to log on to access the video and you can embed it (like the one below) on your Course Management System (we use Blackboard).

I am a huge fan of Twitter Advanced Search because it enables users to search for key terms or hashtags by location or account. Yes, it sounds complicated, but it is not. Check out this video to discover how to use the Twitter Advanced Search.

Celebrating the Texas Social Media Research Institute Seniors!

Every time I become discouraged in higher education, I always have to think about the wonderful students in classes and who are also part of the Texas Social Media Research Institute's internship program.

Each year, our graduating students are honored for their efforts in the organization and also for their hard work serving the community. They have a special recognition ceremony and then they are also encouraged to give advice for others who are in the organization. Words of Wisdom! :)

Enhanced Faculty Features on the EAB Navigate System

This is a quick and simple way to schedule an advising appointment with academic advisors at some higher education institutions. Now, it is EASY to discover when your advisor is available and when you are available (i.e. - now in class).

We had several sessions that focused on the features of the Navigate platform. Yes, I know that the Education Advisory Board company will continue to update the platform, but the basic components of the platform will remain the same (I hope). The components are easy for the faculty, staff, and students to navigate, but these important individuals at the university also need special reminders about the key clicks they need to make to "make things happen" on the platform.

The Student Success Collaborative (Navigate) is an innovative student success technology platform that can enable campuses to provide outreach to students and faculty, measure this outreach, and to make evidence-based decisions about the emerging data.
